Music

Teacher: Olivia Helbach Room: Portable 3

I’m Ms. Helbach, the music teacher at Sacajawea. I believe in students engaging in the four components of music (creating, performing, responding, connecting) in order to experience and view the world around them with a new lens. Music creates an opportunity for students to practice life skills such as cooperation, perseverance, and growth mind-set.

It is very important for students to be engaged and excited about whatever we’re learning whether it be singing, instruments, or silly games! I design lessons with developmentally appropriate activities and expectations. While not every child who takes music will become a musician, they will have the opportunity to connect with the world around them in a new way. This may be with music in pop culture, in their self-identity or culture, or in curiosity of other cultures.

I use instruments such as xylophones, glockenspiels, tubano drums, Boomwhackers, rhythm sticks, egg shakers, and more to engage student interest and hopefully expand their interests. In addition, we use the most accessible instrument- the voice! I love having singing games within my classroom and incorporating them into every grade level.
