    Library News

    Dear Sacajawea Parents and Guardians,

I am excited to be entering my third year as your student's Library Media Specialist.  I would like to share a few things with you about the upcoming school year.

I have decided to pursue National Board certification.  This is a very rigorous program designed to help teachers become better at what they do.  I am very excited about it.  I will be working with certain classrooms as I gather data and try out new teaching strategies.

A new thing in the library will be Burke boxes.  These are kits on various subjects on loan from the Burke Museum at the University of Washington.  We will have them in the library for up to two weeks at a time.

Our school-wide continental focus this year is Oceania.  I will be providing students and teachers with resources so they can do research.

Did you know that parents and guardians have borrowing privileges in the Sacajawea school library?  If you would like a library card, just stop by whenever I am here or send an email and I will set you up.

Special programs in the library this year include the Washington Children's Choice Picture Book Award contest and the Global Reading Challenge.  The picture book contest is for students in Grades K through 3.  Students will be exposed to 20 new picture book titles and vote for their favorite at the end of the year.

The Global Reading Challenge is for students in Grades 4 and 5.  Any student who chooses to participate reads up to 10 chapter books and then answers factual questions drawn from each book.  Students are on individual teams and compete against each other in a quiz-team format.  More information about this program will come out soon.

I truly love my job and especially the contact time getting to know your children.  I often tell the students as I am starting a lesson:  "I have just gone on a treasure hunt and discovered some gems that I would like to share with you."  It is my hope that your student(s) will discover many gems in the library during the course of the school year.

I work Wednesday morning and all day Thursday and Friday.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

    Sincerely,
    Sean Harvey
