    Dear Sacajawea Community,
The Sacajawea staff and I are excited to welcome many of our students back to school in person on Monday, April 5th.  Our Developmental Preschool and Distinct program students and staff have had a good week together so far, and we are all looking forward to the weeks to come. Here are a few things to know about the upcoming transition to our hybrid program for the remainder of our students:
    Schedules and Classroom Placements
Art, Health and Fitness, Library, one on one sessions, and small group supports will mostly be scheduled during asynchronous or remote sessions. These will be different for each class or small group.
    Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday:

    • For Kindergarten through second-grade students, current classroom teachers will teach in-person learning sessions from 8:00 – 10:45 AM and remote live sessions in the afternoon between 11:45 AM and 2:30 PM.
    • For 3rd grade students, both in-person and remote sessions will be taught by Ms. Maynard and Ms. Warner from 8:00 – 10:45 AM.
    • Fourth and Fifth grades will each have two in-person sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon taught by their current teachers. 4th Grade remote students will have their live sessions with Ms. Maynard in the afternoon, and 5th-grade remote students will have their live sessions with Ms. Warner in the afternoon.
    • All students will participate in remote learning with their homeroom teachers from 8:00 –9:30 AM. All fourth-grade students will meet with Ms. Teague and all fifth-grade students will meet with Mr. Reddecliffe.
    Daily Health Screening
    • All in-person students will need to have a completed, approved health screening each day. Families will receive the daily health screening by email before 7 AM each day and will have the option to change this to text after the first email.
    • Office staff will begin checking for completed health screenings and calling those who have not completed them around 7:15 AM.  If your child is not attending school, please call the office at (206) 252-5550 or email: before 7:15 AM in order to avoid receiving these phone calls.
    • Any student arriving at school without an approved health screening will wait in our waiting area while we contact their family to complete the health screening.  Once the screening is approved, they will be able to go to class. If the health screening is not approved, the student will have to return home.
    Procedures for Arrival
    • Students arriving by car will disembark in front of the school south of the bus zone.  Please stop to unload at the car drop off sign and do not park in the bus zone or across the street.  A staff member will be there to welcome each student.
    • Students arriving by bus will be assisted in the bus zone by their program staff members.
    • Students walking or wheeling to school should come through Sacajawea park from the south or up 20th from the north.  Please do not use the sidewalk where students are unloading from busses.
    • For families who wish to park and walk their students in, please park at Sacajawea park on 94th  or on 96th street.
    • Kindergarten through second-grade students will enter through the lower playground front gates and go directly to their classrooms. K-2 Parents may walk with their students to their classrooms but should not stay on campus or enter the building.
    • Third through fifth-grade students will enter the building through the main front doors. Family members can come with them to the entrance, but not into the building.
    Procedures for Departure
    • PreK-2 Students and their siblings leaving by car will meet their transportation at our back entrance on 96th street.
    • 3rd – 5th-grade students who do not have K-2 siblings will meet their transportation at our front entrance on 20th street in the same location as morning drop-off.
    • Families will be given a car-pick-up card with their child’s name and teacher name/room number on it. Staff will look for the cards in your window and will walkie-talkie each child’s classroom to have them come out to meet their ride.
    • Students riding the bus will meet the bus at the bus zone, and be assisted by their program staff as needed.
    • K-2 students whose families walk in to pick them up will be released to their parents or caregivers by teachers on the lower playground.
    • 3rd – 5th-grade students whose families walk in to pick them up will be released to caregivers on the upper playground.
    • Both playgrounds will be closed for play. For everyone's safety, please do not stay on campus to play or socialize.

At tonight’s parent orientation, I will review our safety protocols and procedures, and there will be time for questions and answers.  You may also refer to the orientation materials on our Sacajawea school website for more information.
The orientation will be in English with Spanish and ASL interpretation provided.  Here’s the link to register.
    Looking forward to continuing together,
    Rachel Friesen, Principal

5th Grade Families - Do You Have Middle School Questions?

We’re working on putting together a newsletter Q&A to help answer any questions that 5th grade families may have about moving onto Jane Addams Middle School next year. We have lots of current families that have kiddos in middle school and at Sacajawea that we can tap into to help answer any questions that you or your kids may have. (We can connect you to Eckstein resources as well.)  If you have questions, please email Laura Riley ( We’ll compile the list of questions and answers to share in the newsletter.  If there is additional interest, we could also do a short virtual info session with 5th and 6th graders and their parents. Contact Laura if you need more info.
