    A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

    Dear Sacajawea Community,

Thanks to all who came out to our distribution event today.  We’ll do these events every other week. Starting in October, we’ll be adding an option for students to order library books!  Here are a few other things coming up in October 1) Our iPad cases are due to be delivered, 2) An event to welcome new families (date to be announced) 3) Virtual Curriculum Night (date to be announced) 4) Our newly-asphalted playground is scheduled for the district part of the painting on October 5th and 6th.  After that, if the weather stays dry enough, our Sacajawea volunteers will work on adding color and decoration to the white paint that the district will provide.  We hope to have a beautiful, inviting playground when we return to in-person learning.  Yes, we will be back in school in person one day!  We don’t know when, but we are preparing for that time to come.

One thing I’d like to remind you of is that presently, the way Teams is set up for the district, we do not have control of the chat feature in Teams.  While teachers can ask students not to use it during key times in the classroom, we can’t control student choices to use the chat feature at other times, and chats cannot be deleted.  The district is working with Microsoft to get this changed so I have hope that it won’t be long before we can have control over this.  In the meantime, we are setting and reinforcing expectations around the use of the chat with students.  This is new for them too, and they are excited about being able to interact with friends and schoolmates in this medium.  We don’t want to keep them from enjoying friendships, but we do want to keep the time, place and content of the chats safe, appropriate and not interrupting learning times.

Thanks once again for your patience, perseverance and kindness as we are making the transition into remote learning.  We’ve had many positive notes and encouraging words to teachers and to me as we are learning while doing.  We are continuing to work toward more stable, consistent systems, and helping students become more independent to be able to access learning and work.

    Thank you for your partnership,

    Rachel Friesen, Principal

    School Updates

    Distribution Day Schedule

Our next distribution day is this Thursday, September 24th from 3:00 to 4:00 PM.  This will be much simpler than the last two, as we will only be distributing learning materials and supplies as needed.

Each grade level will have a location on the playground from which to pass out their items.  You may also return any work or books that need to be returned.

Starting today, each student will have a set of bags with his or her name tagged to it.  Teachers will use the bags to give items to you, and you will use them to return items.  There will be two bags for the classroom and two bags for the library.  Classroom bags are blue and library bags are black.
Thursday, students will receive the first classroom bag and will exchange it in two weeks for the second classroom bag.

Cars will be able to drive directly to their teacher’s location, receive their bag, and exit the playground.  We will have someone there to assist in directing traffic to help as we enter and exit.
Walkers will need to stay under the breezeway and walk around the playground, staying out of the vehicle pathway to go to their teacher’s area to pick up their bags.

As always, please wear a mask and maintain 6-feet of distance.

This week will be classroom materials only, and will not include library books.  We will begin library curbside pick up with 3rd-5th Grades in October, and will add K-2 the following distribution day.
Need delivery of your items?  Please contact your child’s teacher or Mrs. Friesen.

Can’t be here on Thursday?  We can hold your items in the office.  Please let us know when you will be able to pick them up.

    Upcoming Distribution Days:
    Thursday 9/24 – all students 3:00 – 4:00 PM
    Thursday 10/8 – all students 3:00 – 4:00 PM
    Thursday 10/22 – all students 3:00 – 4:00 PM

    Packs for Kids and Families

Packs for Kids, the Hunger Intervention Program, and community members partner with Sacajawea Elementary School to offer extra help during school building closures and COVID-19. Each Friday, participating families discretely receive a box for delivery or pick-up, free of charge.

If your family could use a little help, contact Charlene Shanahan cyshanahan@seattleschools.org. All records are kept confidential. The enrollment form is available for download, too.

If you're able to assist with donations, please see our updated list of needs. Thank you!

    Tech Troubleshooting and Resources

    1) Looking for General Helpful Information and "How To" videos?
Seattle Public Schools has set up "How To Guides" for Remote Learning in one place.  Has helpful information and videos showing how to access Schoology, SeeSaw, and Teams.
    https://www.seattleschools.org/district/calendars/news/what_s_new/technology_for_remote_learning

    2) Having trouble getting into (or back into) a class session?
We’ve noticed that sometimes teachers are not able to see the waiting room while they are teaching or sharing their screens. If you don’t get a response after waiting a few minutes, you can call the school office. Mr. Harvey or Mrs. Friesen will work with you to try to get your child back to class as quickly as possible. We can also send you your child’s username and password, reset a password or send you a teacher’s whole class Teams Meeting Link.

    3) Need help connecting with your device or have a tech question?
If the SPS Technology for Remote Learning page and "How To" videos didn't answer your questions, we are fortunate to have some tech-savvy parents at our school that are available to share their knowledge.

    PTA Updates

    School Directory and PTA Membership

We've taken our Sacajawea School Directory and PTA Membership process completely online this year. By completing your information quickly, you'll help us compile the directory in record time! Later this fall, we'll distribute paper copies of the school directory to each Sac family.

For our directory, we need to get the info and confirmation from 100% of our families. Please help us by participating.

To complete your information, visit the Directory and PTA Membership page on the PTA website.
Please contact Tiffany Elliott (tiffanymelliott@gmail.com) and Laura Riley (lkriley99@outlook.com) for questions or concerns.

    Sacajawea Black Lives Matter T-Shirts

The Parent Racial Equity Team is taking pre-orders for a Sacajawea BLM T-Shirt featuring artwork from Sacajawea student Calle Shanahan. The suggested donation is $10 per shirt to help cover printing costs. In case you're wondering, this shirt project is in addition to the continental focus t-shirts we'll do later this year.

Fill out your order online at bit.ly/SacBLMShirt, or drop off checks and printed order forms during materials distributions at Sacajawea. If you'd like to print your order form, download it here in English and Spanish.
