    102 Community News

                                            Week of September 4-6, 2019

    Highlights

This newsletter is an example of what you will see coming home every Tuesday starting next week.

The "102 Community News" portion of the homework packet is for the adults and students to read. It is our class newsletter. This section of the newsletter will have news and information about the learning and activities going on in Room 102 and more.

3-ring binders: These are expected to travel back and forth between school and home every day. Adults, please help your child navigate his or her binder, especially the HOMEWORK section and HOME front pocket. In those two areas, there are items that may need your student to finish up classwork or may require family reading about something going on in Room 102, or may need forms filled out, signed and returned to school.

District Paperwork: Find the envelope with all the VERY IMPORTANT paperwork from the District. Many of the items need to be read, revised or filled out, signed and returned. Have fun!

    Student Homework

    Reading

Find a good fit chapter book.  Read 20-30 minutes, 5 days a week outside of school.   We will also spend time in class reading.  You may bring a chapter book from home to read or choose one from my classroom library.

    Organization

Practice organizing and using your binder.

The goal is that there should be no loose papers crammed haphazardly into the binder.  Time will be given in the beginning of the year to tidy and organize binders each day.  Practice opening, closing, and organizing at home.

    Proper binder order:

Notes Home = Left hand pocket of binder’s cover (Home pocket)

Pencil pouch = On top of first tab divider.

    Monthly Calendar

1st tab divider = Homework section (for Homeroom’s homework)

2nd tab divider = Math (math classwork and math homework)

    3rd tab divider = Reading

    4th tab divider = Writing

5th tab divider = S/SS (Science and Social Studies)

    Classroom Presentation:  My Name

Ask the adults in your family the story of your first name.  Try to find three, or more, details about how you were named.  Some ideas include:

Who are you named after? A relative, a famous person, a place, or something else?

Were there other names you might have been called, why were these considered and what were they?

What is the story behind your name?

Does your name have a special meaning and what is it?

Do you have a nickname, where did it come from and what is it?

Are there other ways to spell your name?

Practice the presentation several times, so you are comfortable with it.

The class always enjoys these presentations! Have fun with yours!
