    Dear Sacajawea Families,
A few days ago, it was announced that we now have a tentative agreement to guide the return to in person instruction for all families, Preschool through Fifth Grade, who elect to send their students back to school in person and how we will continue to support students whose families opt for remote learning.

Here is what to know right now:

    • A new, quick-turn-around, survey will be sent to K-5 families by the district in the next couple of days in which you can indicate your choice for your child. We will use your responses to plan cohorts and learning schedules for all students. For Kindergarten through second grade families, please do respond even though you may have already indicated this in a previous survey.
    • Families with students in our Preschool and Distinct programs, instead of a survey you may communicate any changes in your decision directly to me between now and Tuesday, March 23rd .
    • For in-person students, the learning model will be hybrid, with in-person students attending school ½ days on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and remote students having live instruction also half-days. Most of the in-person services will happen in the mornings, but there may be some afternoon groups at grade levels where larger numbers of students request in-person learning. All students will have asynchronous learning assignments for part of the day when they are not receiving live instruction
    • Wednesdays will consist of some live remote sessions for all students, with most of the day being asynchronous. At Sacajawea, we’re considering how we can find ways for both remote and in person students to experience learning together and continue building relationships and school culture Wednesdays.
    • For Sacajawea, students who choose in-person will return to school in two phases. Students in our Distinct and Developmental Preschool programs will be able to attend in person starting Monday, March 29th, and all other students will be able to attend in person starting April 5th.
    • We are working and planning diligently to ensure that we have all the safety equipment, systems and protocols in place to create a safe environment for all students and adults at Sacajawea. Soon, I will send out a guide that will contain information about these procedures.
    • I also plan to provide at least one orientation meeting/Q&A session for families online in the coming days. As soon as I have dates and times, I will send that information to you.

I know that there is a lot of information coming out quickly, after having very little information. Please feel free to reach out to me with your questions and concerns. I’m excited to welcome some of our students back to in person learning soon, and want to support all students, families and staff through this transition.

    In Partnership,
    Rachel Friesen, Principal

5th Grade Families - Do You Have Middle School Questions?

We’re working on putting together a newsletter Q&A to help answer any questions that 5th grade families may have about moving onto Jane Addams Middle School next year. We have lots of current families that have kiddos in middle school and at Sacajawea that we can tap into to help answer any questions that you or your kids may have. (We can connect you to Eckstein resources as well.)  If you have questions, please email Laura Riley ( We’ll compile the list of questions and answers to share in the newsletter.  If there is additional interest, we could also do a short virtual info session with 5th and 6th graders and their parents. Contact Laura Riley ( if you need more info.
