    Dear Sacajawea Families,

A top priority at Sacajawea is ensuring a welcoming, student-affirming learning environment. Identity safety – the opportunity for students to see themselves, their culture and history – in school is fundamental to creating such an environment. It’s one strategy to eliminate opportunity gaps and ensure a great education for every student.

To that end, next week, Sacajawea will be participating in Black Lives Matter at School Week. This week of action and learning is a national effort. (You can find out more about the national work on the main Black Lives Matter at School website.) In Seattle, a working group of the SPS Ethnic Studies Task Force and SEA developed lessons to support educators and students for each day of the week. Many teachers at Sacajawea will be teaching the lessons. We encourage you to look at these lessons and talk to your children about what they are learning. The lessons can be found on the Seattle Education Association's website

While we will specifically participate in the Black Lives Matter at Schools next week, providing identity safety and teaching our children about equity, racism and social justice are part of the work we do every day. To continue this work, Seattle Public Schools has been piloting ethnic studies with the plan to expand these supports into schools K-12 in the coming months. At Sacajawea, our Racial Equity Team is working with staff to support this work and our adult learning about race and equity.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me or your child’s teacher if you have questions or ideas regarding Black Lives Matter Week or our work on equity and racism at Sacajawea. Another great place to participate is our Racial Equity Team. Information can be found in the Equity Team post below.

    In Partnership,
